Health Insurance for Realtors-Or Any Other Small Businesses, Individuals or Self-Employed. Are There ANY Good Options?

Health Insurance for Realtors-Or Any Other Small Businesses, Individuals or Self-Employed.  Are There ANY Good Options?

As far as I know, there really are not any good and affordable options out there for self employed people or small businesses like us.  I could go on a big rant about this but I will try not to!

When I looked around a few years ago and did some research, I found the only option for GROUP insurance under the current laws which restrict our associations from forming a group like any corporation can, was through NASE-National Association for Self Employed

This was the only GROUP policy I could find at that time. Does anyone know of any others?  It is expensive, like any insurance, but at least it does not keep going up by very much each year like it does with an individual policy. They (MEGA), like most insurance companies, try to not pay out as much as possible, so that can be a hassle.  But I felt the fact that they can not single you out and cancel your policy like an individual plan could was a HUGE plus.  Can you even imagine getting ill....and it would already be a hardship not to be working because if we do not work, we have no chance of getting paid.....but then your insurance company decides to cancel your health insurance ***because they can***...and then you not only have no income, but no health insurance and NO insurance companies willing to take you on because now you have a pre-existing condition?  And it happens all the time!

I am also wondering if anyone knows of a good Dental Policy let me know, because this one is the pitts...it hardly covers anything!

Does anyone else think this is outrageous that we can not form a group through our associations?

Has anyone else seen Michael Moore's movie about this, called Sicko?

It is a sick situation, for sure! So stay positive and stay healthy:-)

It's because groups like the National Association of Realtors don't want to pay the fee...I looked at their group health plan...It is more for me than I pay on an individual plan with my wife that includes dental...what gives. But you can get a solo 401(K) since you have a business license....e mail me and i can give you a referral for the state your in.

This is one of the area where the NAR could have spent some time lobbying better on our behalf.  We came close to qualifying as a group, but no cigar.

I have an individual policy with State Farm with a high deductibe and it costs me about $2300 a year.

Fortunately, I'm very healthy and don't routinely use the medical field for anything.  But, back in 1999, I got a hot appendix and they paid everything but the deductible.

Hi Chuck and thanks for the comment!  I was  looking for other group insurance options if any you know of are available.  I believe the current laws restrict NAR and other associations from forming a group.  My broker also looked into forming a group for our company and ran into the same wall....they could not do it as the laws now stand.

Thanks for commenting on my post and sharing the links.  Definitely, group insurance would be the way to go...I wonder why the laws are like they are...

Hi Lenn...I really think NAR was lobbying very hard on our behalf on this and for the behalf of all small businesses.  I do not remember the exact results, but they were making some progress...

I had a Fortis Policy through State Farm and switched to NASE to get in a group. Stay healthy!

Our state realtors association (WRA) does promote options for health insurance policies, through an HMO around here. Our family gets our health insurance through this.  While we have to pay for it ourselves, at least it is tax deductible, and the cost is not out of line.  I know people who pay more for less coverage through employer provided policies.

BRENDA What state are you in...is that thru Healthy Options...a state run health insurance based on your income?
Posted by Your Financial Coach about 4 years ago
Chuck, we are in Wisconsin.  It is not a state run program.  The WRA (Wisconsin Realtors Assoc) sends out info on it, and the policy is offered through Dean Health Insurance.  More info is at http://www.deancare.com/healthplan/realtors/index.asp?V=1

Hi Debra, we have a group program through our state association...pricy but it is not underwritten so anyone who is a Realtor can get coverage.  This program is through Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Gary-that is so interesting that you can get a group policy...not in IL!

Brenda-Thanks for the input!

Chuck-thanks for the comments.

Debi-good luck with the links:-)

I know that my local business association provides some type of group health insurance for small businesses. I don't know the details, but maybe your local business association could give you some direction.

Thanks for your comment, Linda...what state are you in?   Our brokers really looked into this for us and were not able to form a group in IL until the laws change.

Debra, I am in Pennsylvania.

Linda-were you able to actually get on a group policy there?  Is it affordable?
